if we want to make legal IDs trans & nb-friendly the best option is to literally just get rid of gender markers on legal forms. I’m [gender redacted] and never in a million years would I want to change my legal gender marker to an “x” because that feels like putting a target on my back.
genetic gender is important for medical situations
That’s great honey except
1. That has nothing to do with your ID. Even if you were to say that EMTs might need it in a medical emergency, people are able to change their legal gender. So your legal gender doesn’t reflect whether you have XX or XY anyway.
2. Legal gender has never reflected whether someone has XX or XY chromosomes. It has only reflected what doctors decided your legal gender would be at birth. How many of us have had a genetic test to see what our chromosomes were? Why aren’t there separate legal markers for combinations like XXY or X0?
3. You say that chromosomal makeup is important for medical situations, and it can be, but most of the time it isn’t. Hormone knowledge is necessary far more often, and even that isn’t commonly necessary knowledge in medical situations. The fact is, the medical field doesn’t do a whole lot of research on how common procedures or medications might act differently in people who are undergoing hormone therapy. And we still don’t make people put their hormone levels on their ID.
